New River Clear

New River is sparkling clear water today, the first time for 3 or 4 years says the Hinton Herald. It is caused by the discontinuing of the washing of iron ore in its waters in Pulaski County, VA.

Largest Users of Typewriters

Fayetteville enjoys the distinction of using more typewriters per 100 of population than any other town in the United States. The same is true of telephones. Seventy percent of the typewriters used are of one manufacturer.

 

New Thurmond Depot

March 15, 1917

The C&O authorities are said to be preparing to erect a new passenger depot at Thurmond. It will be a three-story building located on the site of the present depot. It has been greatly needed for many years.

Little money but much love

Christ Clifford and Maggie Devlin, a Scarbro couple were married in the county clerk's office yesterday. They walked in from Scarbro leaving home at 4 o'clock in the morning. After paying for his license the groom had 90 cents left and tendered the preacher half a dollar for his services. Rev. Light asked him if that was all he could pay and the young man cheerfully gave up his remaining 40 cents and the couple started walking home tired, and broke, but happy...
